A while back a friend of mine suggested I tune in to watch Super Soul Sunday’s, Oprah’s talk show. I didn’t take her advice until my wife started watching it and raving about how awesome it was. I finally sat down to watch an episode and I must say it’s a very powerful show. Oprah interviews a variety of extraordinary people from all walks of life. She has very deep and meaningful conversations with philosophers, visionaries, spiritual leaders, authors and the like. She and her guests discuss subjects ranging from personal transformation to the existence of God and eternal life. I found the topics to be very interesting, thought provoking and inspirational. The most recent guest I had the pleasure of listening to was Thich Nhat Hanh, a Zen Master and human rights activist. He spoke on several topics but the one that resonated with me most was what he had to say about being mindful. He said:”Mindfulness can help us to look into the difficulty and the suffering we have”. He went on to say that we can learn from suffering and rise up from the ashes like the Phoenix. Being mindful allows us to decide how we will respond to the circumstance that it causing our suffering. Once we recognize that we can control how we react to it we can then move towards a different perspective. We can always change our attitude, our thought patterns and our actions if we so choose. In order to do that we need to be disciplined about being mindful. I believe the principle Master Hanh referenced is a key step on the path to inner peace, healthy living, and happy existence. Sounds like a great idea if you ask me. Thank you Thich Nhat Hanh for your wonderful wisdom and advice! May we all be blessed with more love and light!
